How to Navigate Plovdiv on Foot, by Bus and by Taxi

Plovdiv is best explored on foot but buses and taxis connect the hills and outlying districts. Learn the routes, fares and taxi traps before you go.

How to Navigate Plovdiv on Foot, by Bus and by Taxi

You step off the train at Plovdiv Central and the first thing you notice is the hill. Nebet Tepe rises directly ahead, topped with ruins and a flag. The pedestrianised centre sits somewhere between you and it, across a six-lane boulevard and a bridge over the Maritsa. The walking city you read about exists. It does not start at the station.

Walking the Core

Plovdiv rewards feet in its core. The pedestrianised zone runs from Central Square (pl. Tsentralen) along Knyaz Alexander I Street to the Ancient Stadium, then climbs into the Old Town cobbled lanes bounded roughly by Tsar Ivaylo Street, Saborna Street, and the Nebet Tepe hilltop. You cover that entire area in 20 minutes end to end. The surface matters: the Old Town uses uneven granite setts, not smooth paving. Wear shoes with grip, not fashion sneakers. The hills of Plovdiv, Nebet Tepe, Dzhambaz Tepe, and Taksim Tepe, add elevation gain you do not expect. A walk from the Kapana district up to the Old Town takes roughly 8 minutes on a shallow gradient. The same walk in reverse, downhill, takes 5 but taxes your knees on the cobbles.

When To Use the Bus

The limit of walking is where the hills split the neighbourhoods. The south bank of the Maritsa, where the Rodopi bus depot sits, is a 25-minute walk from the Old Town across the pedestrian bridge. The Trakia district, a large residential zone east of the centre, is 40 minutes on foot and not a pleasant walk. This is where the bus network takes over.

Plovdiv City Buses: Routes, Fares and the Night Network

The municipal operator OTP Plovdiv runs 29 daytime routes and 4 night routes. You do not need a route map memorised. The lines you will use are a handful.

For the Old Town and Kapana, any bus stopping at pl. Tsentralen (Central Square) works. Routes 1, 4, 7, 9, and 20 all stop there. From the railway terminal, take bus 1 or 20 directly to the square; journey time is 8 minutes. From the Rodopi bus depot, bus 9 crosses the river and reaches the square in 12 minutes.

The night network runs four lines, numbered N1 through N4, on a 30-minute frequency from 23:00 to 05:00. N1 connects the railway terminal to the centre and continues to the Trakia district. If you are stranded after the last bar closes, N1 is your backup. It runs every half hour. Do not rely on taxis at 03:00 on a Tuesday; they are scarce and the drivers know it.

How To Pay the Bus Fare

The single ticket price in 2026 was 1.00 BGN when you tap a contactless bank card on the validator inside the bus. Cash from the driver costs 1.50 BGN. The driver does not give change, so you need exact coins for the 1.50 rate. The contactless tap is simpler: tap once on boarding, the machine deducts 1.00 BGN. There is no need to tap off. The validator screen shows a confirmation in Bulgarian and English. If the machine screen says "Nevaliden" or flashes red, your card was not accepted. Try a different card or pay the driver cash. The single biggest tripwire: inspectors board without warning and check validation. If your tap did not register and you cannot show a receipt from the machine (it prints a small paper slip if you press the button), you pay a fine of roughly 20 BGN on the spot. Inspectors do not accept excuses.

Minibus Routes (Marshrutkas)

OTP Plovdiv also runs 11 marshrutka lines, numbered 1 through 11. These are smaller vehicles that stop on demand rather than at every official stop. They follow fixed routes but you wave to board and tell the driver where you want to get off. Fares are the same 1.00 BGN with contactless, 1.50 BGN cash. Routes 5 and 8 are the most useful: they run from the centre east toward the Trakia district and the fairgrounds. Marshrutkas do not run on the night schedule; the last departure from the centre is around 21:30.

Taxis in Plovdiv: the Overcharge Tricks to Avoid

Taxis are necessary when buses have stopped or when you carry luggage between districts. The failure case is the railway terminal. Drivers at Plovdiv Central approach passengers directly in the arrivals hall and quote a flat rate of 10 BGN to the centre. The meter fare for that 2.5 km ride is 4 BGN to 5 BGN. You will be overcharged by 100 percent.

The fix: walk out of the terminal building to the official taxi rank on the street outside. Look for cars with a yellow licence plate and a visible rate card on the passenger window. Legible rates are 0.79 BGN per km base, 0.90 BGN per km at night (22:00 to 06:00), with a starting fare of 1.50 BGN. Confirm the driver uses the meter before you get in. If he says the meter is broken, step out and take the next car. Ride-hail apps work in Plovdiv: Uber is not present, but the local app TaxiMe operates reliably and shows the estimated fare before booking. Download it before you arrive. A ride from the railway terminal to Kapana through TaxiMe costs 4.50 BGN to 5.50 BGN at midday.

From the centre to the airport (12 km southeast in Krumovo), the taxi fare should be 12 BGN to 15 BGN. Drivers at the centre will quote 20 BGN. Insist on the meter or use TaxiMe. At 01:00 after the night buses have stopped, a taxi from Kapana to the Trakia district costs roughly 8 BGN by meter. The surcharge is minimal. Do not accept a flat rate of 15 BGN.

Reaching the Rhodope Foothills: Buses from the Rodopi Station

The Rhodope mountains start 19 km south of Plovdiv at Asenovgrad. The bus network from the Rodopi bus depot (on ul. Dimitar Talev, south bank of the Maritsa) covers it. Buses to Asenovgrad run every 20 to 30 minutes and take 30 to 40 minutes for a fare of 3 to 4 BGN. From Asenovgrad, local minibuses continue to Bachkovo Monastery and trailheads further into the hills. A bus from the Rodopi depot to Bachkovo takes 40 minutes.

For deeper access, Smolyan is the central Rhodopes hub, reachable by bus in 2 hours 30 minutes for 14 to 18 BGN, with 6 to 8 departures per day. Chepelare, the launch point for the Pamporovo ski area, takes 2 hours by bus. Both routes run from the Rodopi depot and also from the Yug terminal (ul. Hristo Botev 47), where the Sofia buses arrive. Check departure times the day before; frequencies drop sharply after 17:00, especially on Sundays.

The Narrow Gauge Alternative

An alternative mountain route involves the narrow gauge railway from Septemvri to Dobrinishte. Reach Septemvri from Plovdiv by train in 40 minutes, with 10 to 12 departures per day. The narrow gauge line is a scenic trip through the Rhodopes, not a fast transfer. Treat it as a day trip on its own. Do not use it as a commuter connection to the ski slopes; the buses are faster.

Common Questions

What is the cheapest way from Plovdiv train station to the Old Town?

Bus 1 or 20 from the station to pl. Tsentralen. Cost is 1.00 BGN via contactless card. Journey is 8 minutes. The walk is 20 minutes uphill. Avoid taxis from the station hall.

Can I use a Sofia public transport card on Plovdiv buses?

No. Sofia's BKK card and app do not work in Plovdiv. Use a contactless bank card or buy a ticket with cash from the driver. The Plovdiv system has no day pass or stored value card.

How do I get to Bachkovo Monastery without a car?

Take a bus from Plovdiv Rodopi station heading toward Asenovgrad (every 20, 30 min). Tell the driver you want Bachkovo. Fare is approximately 5 BGN. The journey takes 40 minutes. The monastery is a short walk from the bus stop.

Are taxis safe at night in Plovdiv?

Use TaxiMe app or official yellow plate cabs from a rank. Do not accept rides from drivers who approach you at the station or near bars at closing time. Confirm the meter is running. Fares are low by EU standards.
