What to See in Brașov After the Main Square

Brașov rewards a second day with Tâmpa Mountain hikes, the Schei district's Romanian heritage and the old Saxon bastions most visitors skip.

What to See in Brașov After the Main Square

You have 45 minutes to decide what fills the rest of your day after you photograph Piața Sfatului and the Black Church. Most visitors default to Bran Castle and drive 28 km for a 55 RON ticket, but by 11:00 the morning crowd peaks and the ticket queue eats 20 minutes. Skip it on day two. Walk west through Catherine's Gate into the Schei district, where the Romanian identity of Brașov lived while Saxons controlled the walled town.

The Schei District: Where Romanians Lived Outside the Walls

From 1559 until the late 19th century, ethnic Romanians could not own property inside the Saxon fortifications. They built Schei, the suburb beyond Catherine's Gate, and it remains a different Brașov. The cobbled street Șcheii Brașovului leads to the 18th century St. Nicholas Church, the centre of Romanian cultural life in medieval Transylvania. The first Romanian language school operated next door; its museum holds the 1762 primer used to teach reading in Romanian. Entry is 10 RON. Budget 40 minutes inside.

What To Look For In The Alleyways

The side streets off Piața Unirii hold one-room houses built against the hillside, some with original wooden gates from the 1700s. Look for the 1827 Schei Gate at the far end of the street, the only entrance the Habsburgs allowed Romanians to use for trade. The walk from Catherine's Gate to the Schei Gate takes 15 minutes on foot. Do it at 09:30 before the school groups arrive at 10:30.

Tâmpa Mountain Without the Cable Car Queue

The cable car from the lower station at 625 m to 940 m saves legs. The return fare is 35 RON in 2026. But the queue at peak hours, 11:00 to 14:00, runs 25 minutes on a Saturday in August. Hike up instead. Pick one of six marked trails. Trail number 3 starts from the end of Str. Pe Tocile, behind the Ropemakers' Bastion. It is steep, shaded, and deposits you at the Tâmpa summit plateau with a view directly down onto Piața Sfatului. Allow 45 to 60 minutes.

The Towers At The Base

The White Tower and the Black Tower sit near the trailhead. Both are free to enter. They close at 18:00, so do them before the hike or on the way down.

The Saxon Bastions Most Day Trippers Miss

Brașov's original fortifications included eight bastions and 28 towers. Seven towers survive. The most intact is the Weavers' Bastion, built 1421 to 1436, now a small museum of the Saxon guild system. Pay 15 RON and spend 30 minutes inside. The Ropemakers' Bastion from 1416 stands at the southern corner of the old wall. It is not open to the public, but the exterior and the adjacent section of original wall are visible from the park.

Walk The Full Circuit

Complete the old fortification line in one hour. Start at the Black Tower, follow the promenade east past the Weavers' Bastion, then south to the Ropemakers' Bastion. The path is paved and has benches at regular intervals.

Râșnov Fortress: the Better Day Trip

If you have a third half-day, drive 15 km to Râșnov Fortress instead of Bran Castle. An adult ticket costs 15 RON, less than a third of Bran's 55 RON. The fortress sits at 650 m elevation and holds a 146 m deep well dug over 17 years from 1623 to 1640. The site is less crowded and has no Dracula marketing. The walk from the car park to the gate takes 10 minutes. Bran Castle drew 1,000,000 visitors in 2019; Râșnov had a fraction of that. The trade-off: no furniture, no interior exhibits. You go for the walls and the view over the Bucegi Mountains.

Bear Watching As An Evening Option

From March to November, operators accredited by the Romanian Ministry of Environment run hides 30 to 50 km from Brașov. Arrive at 15:30 and stay silent until after dusk. The price per person in 2026 ranges from 200 to 400 RON. Groups run 4 to 12 people. No flash photography. The bears are wild; some operators use maize or fruit as bait. Book 48 hours ahead because hides sell out in August. If no hides are available, drive to the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zărnești, 25 km away. It opens at 10:00 and costs 50 RON.

Prejmer Fortified Church: One UNESCO Site Under an Hour

Eighteen kilometres north of Brașov, the Prejmer fortified church earned UNESCO listing in 1993. Its defensive walls stand 12 m high and 3 to 4 m thick, enclosing 272 storage rooms where local families once sheltered during Ottoman raids. The church was started in 1211. Entry is 15 RON, the cheapest UNESCO site in the region. The drive takes 25 minutes. The visit takes 45 minutes. Combine it with the nearby Harman fortified church, 8 km further, which has a working 17th century mechanical clock and costs 10 RON. Neither requires a tour guide or advance booking. Return to Brașov by 14:00.

Avoid The One Common Mistake

The single thing that most often goes wrong here is underestimating the distance to the fortified churches and arriving after 16:00, when ticket offices close at the smaller sites. Prejmer's last entry is 17:00 in summer but Harman's is 16:00. Drive to Prejmer first, then decide if you have time for Harman.

Common Questions

What fills a second day in Brașov after the main square?

The Schei district for Romanian heritage, a 45 minute hike up Tâmpa mountain for the view, and the Weavers' Bastion and White Tower for Saxon defensive architecture. Bran Castle is a day three option best done on a weekday arriving at 09:00.

Is Tâmpa cable car worth the price?

Yes for anyone with mobility limits or less than 90 minutes. The 18 RON one-way fare in 2026 saves 45 minutes of uphill walking. For everyone else, hike trail 3. You get a better sense of the mountain and avoid the midday queue at the lower station.

Can I visit Bran Castle in the same day as Tâmpa?

Not without a car and a rushed schedule. The drive is 40 minutes each way. Bran Castle requires 90 minutes minimum and the 55 RON adult ticket. Attempt both and you are back in Brașov at 17:00 with no time for the bastions.

What is the best time to photograph the old town without crowds?

07:30 to 08:30. The first cable car starts at 09:00. The square has fewer than 12 people at 08:00. The Black Church opens at 10:00, so use this window for wide shots of Piața Sfatului from the Council House tower, 58 m high with a 12 RON entry.

Where do I eat in the Schei district?

La Ceaun on Piața Unirii serves ciorbă de burtă and mămăligă at 25 RON per dish. It is cash only and fills by 13:00. The alternative is the food trucks at the base of Tâmpa on weekends, selling mici and cold beer for 15 RON.
