How to Get Around Brașov and Into the Transylvanian Countryside
Brașov's buses and trains connect the Old Town to Bran Castle, Râșnov and Poiana Brașov. Learn the routes, terminals and taxi apps that work.
Brașov Public Transport is Split Across Three Hubs
Brașov's bus and train network does not converge on a single station. To reach Bran Castle, Râșnov Fortress, or Poiana Brașov by public transport you must change your starting point depending on the destination. The main railway station, Brașov Gara, sits 3 km north of the old town. The two major bus terminals, Autogara 2 in Bartolomeu and the terminal near the industrial zone, serve different routes. Walk to Piața Sfatului expecting a unified hub and you will waste 40 minutes backtracking.
RATBV City Buses Versus Private Route Buses
You can walk across the old town in 15 minutes north to south and 10 minutes east to west. The pedestrian zone is bounded by Str. Republicii, Str. Mureșenilor, Piața Sfatului, Str. Apollonia Hirscher, and Str. Poarta Șchei. You do not need a bus inside this 0.5 km² area. For destinations beyond the old town the local RATBV buses serve Poiana Brașov and the city suburbs. But the buses to Bran and Râșnov are operated by private companies like Transbus Codreanu, not by RATBV, and they depart from the two main bus terminals. Do not wait at a RATBV stop in the city centre for a Bran bus. It will not arrive.
Where Each Bus Actually Departs
The Brașov to Bran bus covers 28 km in 40 to 50 minutes. It leaves from Autogara 2 or the industrial-zone terminal depending on the operator. Both are on the southwestern edge of the city, about 3 km from the old town. The Brașov to Râșnov bus covers 15 km in 25 to 30 minutes and departs from the same terminals. Autogara 2 in Bartolomeu is the more convenient choice for most travellers because it connects to more frequent departures. Attempt to board a Bran-bound bus at a random street stop and the driver will refuse to pick up unscheduled passengers. Walk or take a Bolt to Autogara 2.
Bolt Works in the City, Not in the Countryside
Bolt covers the old town and the immediate suburbs reliably. A ride from Piața Sfatului to Autogara 2 costs roughly 15 to 20 lei and takes 10 minutes. Once you are outside the city, in the villages along the DN73 toward Bran or Rucăr, the map shows no cars. Same on the DN1 toward Predeal. Rely on a Bolt to bring you back from Bran Castle at 6pm and you will wait indefinitely. The failure case is you accept a fixed price from a local taxi waiting at Bran Castle, which charges two to three times the Bolt city rate. Take the last return bus instead. It departs Bran for Brașov around 18:00 to 18:30 depending on the season. Confirm the schedule at the Bran stop before you enter the castle.
Trains Reach Sighișoara and the Prahova Valley, Not Bran
Brașov Gara connects you to the Saxon villages and to Bucharest via the Prahova Valley. The Bucharest to Brașov train runs from Bucharest Nord through Ploiești, Sinaia, Bușteni, and Predeal. The journey takes 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes depending on the train type. The scenic section is the 30 km from Sinaia to Predeal, where the line climbs to 1,040 meters at Predeal station, the highest point on the route. Trains to Sighișoara run along the DN13 corridor. From Sighișoara you can reach the Saxon villages of Viscri, Saschiz, and Biertan by bus. The train does not stop at Viscri itself. To reach Viscri, 80 km from Brașov, you need a bus from Sighișoara or a car. The train is useless for Bran Castle and Râșnov Fortress. There is no passenger rail line to either site.

Day Trips to Saxon Fortified Churches Without a Tour
Two fortified churches are within easy reach of Brașov by public transport. Prejmer is 18 km from Brașov. Take a train from Brașov Gara to Prejmer station and walk 15 minutes to the church. Hărman is 12 km from Brașov and reachable by a RATBV city bus from the old town. Complete both in one morning. The more distant Saxon villages, Viscri at 80 km, Biertan, and Saschiz, require a full day and a bus from Sighișoara, not from Brașov. With only one day do not attempt Viscri by public transport. You will spend five hours in transit for 90 minutes at the church. Do Prejmer and Hărman instead, see both by 1pm, and have the afternoon for the old town.
Poiana Brașov Ski Resort by City Bus
Poiana Brașov is the exception to the fragmented network. A single RATBV bus, number 20, runs from the Livada Poștei stop near the old town directly to the resort. The journey takes 30 minutes. Buses run every 30 minutes in winter and every 60 minutes in summer. The last bus back from Poiana Brașov departs between 20:00 and 21:00. Miss it, and a taxi from Poiana Brașov to the old town costs around 50 to 70 lei. Bolt does not cover Poiana Brașov reliably, so agree the fare before you get in.
Winter Driving Conditions and the Car Hire Option
Hiring a car solves the fragmentation problem but introduces winter risk. The main road to Bran, DN73, climbs to 1,250 meters at Fundata and faces occasional temporary closures in heavy snowfall from November to March. The DN1 toward Predeal, at 1,030 meters, carries the same risk. Winter tyres are mandatory on Romanian public roads when the road is covered by snow, ice, or frost. The condition, not a fixed date, triggers the rule. CNAIR publishes real-time road conditions at cnair.ro. Car hire companies in Brașov require a minimum age of 21, a valid driving licence, a passport, and a credit card. Non-EU licence holders need an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Snow chains are not legally required for passenger cars but are recommended for the mountain passes. If you lack winter driving experience do not drive the DN73 in January. The bus to Bran is the safer choice.
The One Thing That Most Often Goes Wrong on This Page
The most common failure is arriving at Brașov Gara and assuming every route operates from that single point. The train station serves Sighișoara, Bucharest, and the Prahova Valley. It does not serve Bran Castle, Râșnov Fortress, or Poiana Brașov. The Bran bus leaves from Autogara 2, 3 km away. The Râșnov bus leaves from the same place. Arrive by train at Brașov Gara with Bran Castle as your plan and do not walk toward the old town. Walk to the front of the station, board RATBV bus 5 to Bartolomeu, and get off at Autogara 2. That route saves you 40 minutes compared to going to the old town first and backtracking to the terminal by Bolt.
Common Questions
Can I walk from Bran Castle to Râșnov Fortress using a hiking trail?
The walking distance between the two is 13 km by road, and there is no marked direct trail. Do not attempt this as a walk between bus connections. Take the Bran to Brașov bus back to Autogara 2 and then the Râșnov bus in the same direction.
Do buses from Autogara 2 accept card payments?
Many private operators still require cash. Carry lei in small denominations. The ticket counter inside the terminal accepts card, but the driver on the bus may not. Assume cash is needed.
How often do buses from Brașov to Bran run?
Roughly every 30 to 60 minutes during the day. Frequency drops sharply after 16:00. The first bus departs around 07:00. Do not rely on a late afternoon departure for a sunset visit to Bran Castle.
Is there a direct bus from Brașov Gara to Autogara 2?
Yes. RATBV bus number 5 runs from the station forecourt to the Bartolomeu terminal. The journey takes 15 minutes. Do not take a taxi from the station to the bus terminal unless you have heavy luggage.
Can I use the same ticket for the RATBV bus and the private Bran bus?
No. RATBV requires a separate ticket, bought from an RATBV kiosk or via the 24pay app. The private buses to Bran and Râșnov issue their own ticket on board. The two systems do not accept each other's tickets.
What should I do if the last bus from Bran has already left?
Call a taxi from Bran village, not from the castle car park. The village-based taxis charge closer to 80 to 100 lei for the return to Brașov, while the castle drivers quote more. Alternatively, try the shared shuttle offered by some guesthouses in Bran, but book ahead.
How early should I arrive at Autogara 2 to buy a ticket for Bran Castle?
Arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure. The ticket queue is slow during summer weekends when tour groups use the same terminal. If the 10:00 bus is sold out, the next one may have standing room only.
