Based on the East Coast of Australia just 30 minutes north of Byron Bay, Pottsville lies silently positioned on crystal waters. Take a walk to the creek on high tide and experience the wonders of the salt water seeping into its mouth and welcoming a variety of fish.

The Water in Pottsville

The creek is one of the great Pottsville sights to see, where you can do a wide selection of activities. From a simple snorkel to kayaking along the banks, this is definitely a place to stop. For the adventurous, stand up paddle boards or kayaks are available to hire from the local shops. A great route to follow is just over 2km starting from Pottsville bridge then inland towards Black Rocks Bridge. For a relaxing experience, let the cooling current drift you down the creek allowing regular shallows for a steady stop at any point. Depending on high or low tide, you can use an inflatable ring or a noodle to gradually glide you along the creek steadily. This current is also fantastic for snorkeling. You can get in just by the bridge and then you can reach the point just by the sea without lifting your head.

In and around Pottsville

A simple run, bike ride or walk through the enviro park will leave any traveler in awe of such a beautiful place. Take time to spot nature at its finest with a wide variety of plants and animals, not forgetting the koalas. In the center lies benches perfect for that seclusive picnic you have been craving or simply stop and listen to the fabulous sounds of the birds. On Tuesday and Thursday nights, take a trip to FDIA boxing club for $5pp to release some tension with all proceeds going to the charity Tweed palliative Care. Wazza the instructor will make sure you have the time of your life and welcomes new people to take part in a boxing session that is fun but certainly gets your muscles working, from the workout itself and from laughing. On a Wednesday night a FREE trivia night at the local Caberitta beach sports club is a great cheap night out with tasty food readily available including $10 pizzas and a Chinese restaurant. Beverages are cheap too.

With plenty to do and see surrounding Pottsville, this is a great position to base yourself while traveling. 30 minutes south is the famous Byron Bay where you will find shops, restaurants and great surf. The shops sell anything from funky t-shirts, handmade jewelry and gifts for everyone. For lunch you can get $10 meals from Hog Breaths Caf√© while overlooking the hassle and bustle of the town. Don’t forget to pack your walking shoes and explore the fantastic Lighthouse trek up and around the most Eastern point of Australia. This 5K route takes you around the spectacular views over beaches and ocean. If lucky you can even spot a shark swimming just off the cliff face like me. Just outside of Byron is a restaurant/shop called ‘The Farm’, all products are produced on the farm or locally and is a cute little stop for a coffee or stroll, perfect for small children to see a farm and some of the animals.

Surfers Paradise is situated around 25 minutes North. Here you can shop, surf, swim or visit the many amusement parks in the area, but beware parking along the beachfront is expensive. After much research, I managed to get a $89.99 voucher which gave me unlimited entry to Wet and Wild, Movie World and Sea World. Normally the entry price for one adult is approx. $75 for each attraction so keep an eye out for online offers. Wet and Wild was amazing especially on a hot day. The rides are thrilling or chill in the Rapids. Movie world was a great experience too especially Looney Toons in 3D and the superman ride. Make sure to stand in the food court to catch a glimpse at the characters parading. Sea world was a definite must with the amazing dolphin show and underwater animal section. There are extras available where you can interactive with the dolphins (other animals available), or dive with sharks. During school holidays I would definitely recommend purchasing the fast track wrist bands for $60 to avoid long queues and to make the most out of your day as some rides you just have to go on over and over again!

For those travelers looking for a relaxing break, Kiva Spa is an exceptional sight to see in any weather, (this is a great stop on a rainy day). For just $20 you can become one with nature for an hour in this small rainforest retreat beautifully hidden off the main Street in Mullumbimby. Crawl through a secret gateway into a world of relaxation and silent mediation. Then jump straight into a cold pool to refresh your soul and revive.  Treatments and other facilities are available. Pay $90 for a 2 hour spa session followed by an amazing massage.

Mount Mourning is a short drive away and is an amazing walk for those looking for a challenge. 360 degree views can be found at the top so don’t forget to take your camera!

Nimbin is also a stop that you must visit when in the area. A quaint little hippy town with unusual trinkets, shops, and herbs (wink wink). Experience the relaxed feeling of the town as you stroll down the street, exploring unique boutiques selling all sorts of special gifts.

This beautiful little town on the East coast of Australia is definitely, in my opinion, one of Australia’s best kept secrets. With so much to see and do around it, it is no wonder Pottsville is marked as an up and coming place for young families to settle down. The area is definitely expanding with loads of new houses being built. I would highly recommend a visit to this fabulous place, but let’s not ruin it’s tranquility and keep Pottsville a secret.
