Mount Rinjani is located in Lombok island, Indonesia. It is the second highest active volcano with 3,726 meters. This is a “Short Gateway + Hike” trip! Starts with Hiking at Mount Rinjani then moved to Gili Trawangan to relax yourself and enjoy with the beach and sun after a hardcore activity.
These are the #rinjani8xplorer! Here’s the stories 🙂
Day 1 – Landed & Check in
Taking AirAsia Flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Lombok, Indonesia took about 3 hours in distance. There are only 2 flight in a day to Lombok Island which are morning 08:35AM & afternoon 3:35PM. (New flight time added recently at 12:35PM).
We took the afternoon flight because the morning one was sold out. It would be suggested to take the morning flight as it takes about 3 hours transfer from airport to the Senaru homestay. We checked in homestay at 11:30pm and got to get up on the next day at 04:30am for breakfast & start hiking.
Dinner of the day :
NASI PADANG & TEH BOTOL
This is the local dishes and one of the famous drink in Indonesia.
Day 2 – Mount Rinjani via Sembalun
Sunrise in Indonesia is an hour earlier then in Malaysia. The sun rise at about 5:30AM. After breakfast, we were then transfer to Plawangan Sembalun for registration and starts hiking at 8:30AM. Lunch break at rest area station 3 which is about 3-4hours away from the starting point. Our group hired 8 portals to help us to carry for our foods, soft drinks, sleeping tents and bag. The porters cook us the meals as well. Porters is the hardest job in the world and I am truly salute to all of them.
You would be amazed with the night view at the base camp. The night sky full of shinning stars.
Day 3 – Summit of Mount Rinjani
Hiking starts at 2:30AM. The summit attack is so much harder and tiring. Walking in the sandy and rocky surface required more energy and steps to move forward. ( Video : Down from Summit of Mount Rinjani )
The amazing feeling when you conquered to the summit of Mount Rinjani! And YOU KNOW YOU DID IT!
Day 4 – Down from Sembalun
One of our friend had injury on his knee, thus we decided to trek down using the same way which the route is shorter, faster and easier.
It was a regret could not visit to the hot spring and see the volcano in near in front of the lake.
Day 5 – Stick Fighting
Stick fight is held on every Wednesday in the village beside the entrance of Sendang Waterfall. It is also called the friendship fight. Our tour guide explained that this game allows them to make new friends. The audience can propose themselves or be selected by the referee edge and fight with other visitor or those selected fighters. (All consequences caused in the game is on own risk of fighter.)
The game is battle between two men armed with rattan sticks in and armored buffalo skin thick and hard. Two men fighters attacking each other & defending their opponent’s blows. The fighters wore with ‘Sarung” and headband without any clothes or other body and face protectors. This game will be performance with the traditional music and a commentator giving spirit to the fighters. The winner is determined by the results obtained value or one of pepadu leaky head, referee will stop the game if the fighter get blood even they still strong enough to fight. Lastly, the winner will be awarded with packed of cigarette, body soap and shampoo or an envelope with small amount of money.
See the crowd? There are more than 100 people of audience at here to watch the stick fighting, from babies to child, from adult to old men. Some of the kids evens climb up to the big tress to watch the show. Foreigner visitor pay for the entrance fee and given a place with chairs, called it “VIP” place.
Day 6 – Tiu Kelep Waterfall
Tiu Kelep Waterfall shared the same entrance with Sendang Waterfall. It required about 40minutes walk/ trekking and river crossing. Getting into the cold water after a long walk and hike is just cool!
You need to hire a guide/locals to bring you there because the waterfall is hidden inside the jungle. This is one the of beautiful waterfall that I ever seen.
Day 7 – The island’s of island – Gili Trawangan
Gili Islands are the islands near the coast of northwest of Lombok Island. It is about 2 hours driving distance away from Sembalulawang town to Teluk Nare Jetty by Van. Then by speed boat took about 5 minutes reach at Gili Trawangan Island.
The Gili Islands are a group of 3 tiny islands which are,
- Gili Trawangan – The largest and most visited of the three islands. The most happening island a.k.a the PARTY ISLAND.
- Gili Air – The closest islands to Lombok. The one with a well developed local community. It is known as the social backpacker island (Camping good spot!)
- Gili Meno – Sandwiched between the other Gili islands. It is known as the island for couples. Best place for honeymoon.
We spend one day & night in Gili Trawangan Island. There is no cars on the island, you can only get around by foot, bicycle or pony carts. It is a small Island I can say because bicycle tour would took you done in less 2 hours! You can simply get to rent a bicycle as your transport of the day (negotiate for price), some hostel even provide with free bicycle service!
You will never want to miss the chance to take photo with the iconic swing of Gili Trawangan Island. (Be there earlier to prevent for lining in a long queue).
Day 8 – Saying Good Bye
Pack & leaving. Will be back again 🙂
