I think people get a little bit confused when I say that I’m proud to be from Adelaide.
General perceptions of Adelaide are this: it’s too far away, it’s just a worse, smaller version of Melbourne, and there’s nothing to do there. Friends, you are SO wrong if you think that. Here are eight stellar reasons that Adelaide is somewhere you will UNDOUBTEDLY LOVE. Guaranteed.
1 | The beach.
I can’t say that I have circumnavigated the entirety of the world’s coastlines, but I would still put my neck out to argue that Adelaide is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world. We are talking wide, sandy beaches with pristine water; ideal for splashing around with your friends (without being attacked by seaweed). We are talking sunsets, beach clubs, shopping, and ice skating in the winter. We are talking clifftop boardwalks. We are talking surfing. We are talking fishing, jetty jumping, rockpools, yachts, bike paths, fish and chips, divine coffee shops, ice cream, palm trees and perfect weather. It’s all right there, under your nose, ready for the taking. If I haven’t yet convinced you, think free parking. It is real.
2 | Barossa Valley
The Barossa Valley is internationally famous for producing the best wines eva, so get on that. But truly, if you’re a wine lover or major foodie, the Barossa Valley is calling to you. Ever heard of Jacob’s Creek? You can go and drink from it. Wine tours are available to take you to a multitude of wineries, or if you’re not too tipsy on a bike, you can check them out on a self-guided cycling adventure. Then there’s the food. Roaring 40s pizza is the place to be. Also, head to Maggie Beer’s farm for delicious preserves. You can play with peacocks and baby chickens, and taste EVERYTHING in the store for free. Bon appetit!
3 | Coffee
Australia is known for some of the best coffee in the world, basically because 2009 happened and we all started calling ourselves ‘coffee snobs’. Adelaide, arguably, is home to the best coffee in Australia, at the most reasonable prices. Cult favourite coffee stops include Bar 9, Monday’s Coffee Store, La Moka and Nutrition Republic. Not to mention the fact that every time I go anywhere I see that a new coffee shop has popped up, begging me to try its rich concoctions. If you are in Adelaide, you are near a good coffee place.
4 | City Centre
One of my favourite things to do when travelling is to spend at least a day in the heart of the city, attempting to live like a local, and discovering little pockets of wonder along the way. Adelaide is a dream come true in this respect, as the main shopping street, restaurant and bar strips, museums, art galleries, theatres, architecture marvels and sporting hotspots are all within about 10 minutes walk of one another. Not to mention the free trams that will take you anywhere within the city, or whisk you off to the beach in half an hour.
Also: shopping. Look, maybe Adelaide is slightly inferior to Melbourne on this point, but I think here in Adelaide we keep it pretty tight. Rundle Mall has it all, from the upmarket stores in Rundle Place to your secret fave, Kmart. Rundle Street houses our unique boutiques that you will lose yourself in and never want to leave. Trust me, I’ve been there.
5 | Mad March
Adelaide is Mecca in March. Why? Because a zillion of our favourite festivals all take place at once. The Adelaide Fringe is the people’s choice, with pop-up venues to die for, comedy, drama, music and circus acts descending from the heavens at affordable prices. Not to mention free street performances, the ever-expanding Croquet Club and the beloved Garden of Unearthly delights to whet your appetite. The Adelaide Festival, the Fringe’s fancier cousin, brings in the big name acts such as Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, and also injects a healthy dose of artistic flair into the city, usually with incredible lighting installations. Then there’s the Clipsal 500 for any car-lover out there. WOMADelaide also makes an appearance, delivering opportunities to dip your toes into a variety of music and culture from around the world.
6 | The Hills
Adelaide is one of those unique places with a beach, city, and forests and hills. Hahndorf is a little German-pocket of Adelaide and features all types of German foods and drinks, gift stores, and is simply a beautiful place to be. Not to mention leaf-crunching, seasonal strawberry picking and chocolate factory tours. The Adelaide Hills are seriously so Insta-worthy. You will get lost in the beauty, and spend hours traipsing the beautiful little towns.
7 | Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is basically all of Australia smooshed together onto one little island. There is an abundance of wildlife, agriculture, road tripping, privacy, natural wonders and budget fun. I can’t say that there’s much of a nightlife on Kangaroo Island, but what you will find is an abundance of things to do during the day. My favourites include visiting the Remarkable Rocks, getting up-close-and-personal with fur seals at Admiral’s Arch and Seal Bay, watching the pelicans feeding at dusk in Emu Bay, sledding on the sand dunes at Little Sahara and trying Lavender ice cream at the Lavender Farm.
Oh I forgot to mention the kangaroos. You WILL SEE kangaroos if you go to Kangaroo Island. Just, everywhere. I was even assaulted by one when I was little. So there is that.
8 | Walks and Hikes
Adelaide is undeniably a very pretty city, and hidden within it are a multitude of stunning walks. Like to walk casually next to a river? Check. Like to walk to waterfalls? Check. Like to walk along cliffs? Check. Like to traipse through forests? Check. Like to walk up a mountain to a stunning view of the city? Check. I am not kidding when I say Adelaide has it all. Popular walks include the Waterfall Gully to Mount Lofty hike, Morialta Falls, Kuitpo Forest, Shepherds Hill Recreation Park, Carrick Hill, Belair National Park and Brown Hill. Get on it!
